"I will be forever grateful to Freedom Eldercare for helping me find a long-term solution and keep my promise." |

Keeping Promises
Visiting my mom was heartbreaking. Congestive heart failure, dementia, and depression required she have long-term care in a skilled nursing facility. Listening to her cry and talk about how unhappy she felt was unbearable.
I promised my dad before he died I would take care of my mom. In my heart, I knew I was letting him down. I was sick with guilt, but had no idea where to turn. Then I called Freedom Eldercare. They sent a geriatric care manager to assess mom. She agreed that long-term care was needed, but said a nursing facility wasn’t our only option. She explained the benefits of an assisted living facility with a live-in caregiver.
Our geriatric care manager located the perfect assisted living community and a compassionate, professional live-in caregiver. While my mom settled in, her caregiver was trained on community policies and procedures. That was over a year ago, and I am pleased to report that mom is doing well. Both of us are much happier. I will be forever grateful to Freedom Eldercare for helping me find a long-term solution and keep my promise.

"They may have started out as help when I needed it… but now they are trusted friends." |

Working Together
I was reluctant to call Freedom Eldercare. My husband has advanced Parkinson’s disease with dementia and requires a catheter. When his condition deteriorated my children started worrying about me. They thought his home care was too much for me to handle alone, but what could I do? He is my husband and no one will take care of him like I do.
A social worker from Freedom Eldercare came to my home for a family meeting. She stressed that they would work with me to care for my husband. She agreed that no one else could provide my loving care, but that Freedom Eldercare would partner with me in my husband’s home care.
We agreed to a trial period with both a live-in and a nighttime caregiver. Within a short time, I found myself wondering how in the world I took care of my husband without them for so long. Thanks to these two wonderful people, I was able to take a vacation with my family this summer—my first in five years. They may have started out as help when I needed it, but now they are so much more than that. They are trusted friends.

"Freedom Eldercare delivered…She was perfect and her help made my last days with Mom possible." |

Help for the Sandwich Generation
I didn’t think the term sandwich generation applied to me. That was until my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. The doctors gave her six months to live. I knew it would be hard, but I wanted to keep Mom at home with me for as long as possible.
My brothers and sister understood my desire to bring Mom home. But none of them felt it was the best solution for her or for me. I have four children between the ages of two and twelve. I also have a neurological condition that could have possibly interfered with my ability to care for both Mom and my children.
I knew I needed help caring for Mom. I also knew that anyone helping me would have to be comfortable with small children. A tall order to fill, but Freedom Eldercare delivered. When I first met Eva she said, “Okay, I am part Mary Poppins and part Florence Nightingale. Where shall we start?” She was perfect and her help made my last days with Mom possible.

"...we were looking for the perfect company and the perfect person, both of which we found at Freedom Eldercare" |
|
Part of the Family
When dad needed help, my brothers and I started looking for the perfect home care company. We all just adore our father, but we knew that he was used to being on his own. Adjusting to live-in care was going to be difficult for him. That is why we were looking for the perfect company and the perfect person, both of which we found at Freedom Eldercare.
We told our eldercare advisor that our father needed a live-in companion, cook, caregiver, and friend. Freedom Eldercare sent us Joseph, a warm, soft-spoken, good-natured man who had been a chef on a cruise ship for many years. After all that time at sea, Joseph was looking for a place to call home.
Fortunately for us, that home turned out to be with our father. In the six months Joseph has lived with dad, he has only taken a handful of days off. Whenever our care coordinators call Joseph about his schedule he says, “I don’t need any time off from my family, but thanks for thinking of me.”

"All it took was one phone call from Freedom Eldercare and my client was conditionally accepted into a wonderful facility." |

Guardian Angel
As an elder law attorney, I am guardian for one of my clients. My client was living in a long-term care nursing facility when I called Freedom Eldercare for advice. He had become highly agitated, combative, and was a wandering risk. In addition, my client was hospitalized four times in three months. After the last hospital stay, his Freedom Eldercare social worker begged me to transfer him to another facility.
I was aware his facility was not the best, but with his behavior, my concern was that no other facility specializing in the care of the elderly would be willing to accept him. All it took was one phone call from Freedom Eldercare and my client was conditionally accepted into a wonderful facility. Freedom Eldercare pledged to provide a care manager, social worker, and home health caregiver to help with his adjustment.
My client got off to a rocky start. Frankly, he wasn’t used to compassionate care. After a month, his social worker made a surprise visit, but the surprise was on her. My client and his caregiver met her at the door. Happily adjusted, he had become the official greeter for his new home.

"I have seen many of Freedom’s employees go above and beyond…" |
|
Whatever It Takes
As a geriatric care manager, I have seen many of Freedom’s employees go above and beyond what would typically be considered the call of duty. One story in particular comes to mind. A team that included myself, a caregiver and a registered nurse, Liz from Freedom Eldercare, were at the home of a client. This client has a long history of psychiatric problems and treatments. Her behavior indicated that she needed to be hospitalized for medication management.
It is always preferable for a client to enter the hospital voluntarily. Just as the client was about to agree to hospitalization, she realized she had no one to care for her beloved poodle Sadie. I assured her that we would take Sadie to a quality kennel. With this suggestion, our client became inconsolable and refused to go to the hospital. Then Liz stepped up and told the client she would take Sadie home with her, which she did. Sadie lived with Liz for four weeks until our client was discharged from the hospital.
