CEU Requirements
Leading Elder Care Education

At Freedom Eldercare we are proud to be recognized as a leader in the home health care industry. In addition to being known as a quality service provider, we are also recognized as an expert in the field of geriatric education. With an average of over twenty years experience, our management team is ideally qualified to offer superior training and quality instruction. That is why many of our colleagues and professional partners turn to Freedom Eldercare for staff and continuing education seminars.

Freedom Eldercare offers over one hundred continuing education seminars a year. These seminars are designed for social workers, case managers, nursing home administrators (LNHA), and Certified Assisted Living Administrator (CALA) professionals. Each of these disciplines requires practitioners to complete a certain number of continuing education units (CEU) for licensure or certification. All Freedom Eldercare programs are approved for CEU by the New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners for CSW, LSW and LCSW, the New Jersey State Department of Health for LNHA and CALA and the Commission for Case Management Certification (CCMC) for Case Managers.

Social worker licensure and certification renewal occurs on a biennial basis. If a person is initially licensed or certified during the second year of the biennial period, at least half of the minimum required credits must be completed. Of those credits, 3 must be in ethics related courses and 10 must be related to clinical practice.

  • LCSW must complete a minimum of 40 continuing education credits. At least 20 credits must be directly related to clinical practice and 5 credits must be related to ethics. If more than 40 credits are earned during a biennial period, 2 can be in courses or programs directly related to clinical practice.
  • LSW must complete a minimum of 30 credits of continuing education, 5 of which must be related to ethics. If the LSW earns more than 30 credits during a biennial period, a maximum of 6 surplus credits can be carried into the next period.
  • CSW must complete a minimum of 20 credits of continuing education, 5 of which must be related to ethics. If the CSW earns more than 20 credits during a biennial period, a maximum of 4 surplus credits can be carried into the next period.

CALA professionals undergo license renewal every 3 years. To qualify, they must complete a minimum of 30 credits of continuing education during a 3-year period.

LNHA administrators are licensed every three years and must complete 60 hours of continuing education. This includes health or health related courses, and seminars and programs relevant to long-term care administration. In addition, attending board approved professional trade association meetings can yield up to 10 credits during a 3-year period. If an administrator earns excess credit hours, they may carry 10 hours from one licensing period to the next.

Case Managers receive certification from the Commission for Case Management Certification (CCMC). In order to keep this designation from the CCMC, Case Managers must complete 80 hours of acceptable continuing education credits over a 5-year period. Upon completion of the 80 hours, the certification is considered renewed for another five years.
